February 1 st found us meeting up for at 10:15 am at 3014 Charleston Highway, for
our annual “Polar Bear Run” to DoLittle Field in Calhoun County. We were met by
Donna Stanfield dutifully checking in the folks as we arrived so as not to leave
anyone behind. The morning started out at about 42 degrees, and rose to a
balmy mid-50’s by the afternoon. Hardly “polar” by many standards, but it’s the
spirit that counts!
While gathering, we had the distinct pleasure of viewing Stephen Samuels’ 1952
Jowett Jupiter. One of only about 900 built between 1950 and 1954, it is truly a
beautifully restored vehicle.
The drive takes 45 minutes to an hour through the back roads and rolling terrain
of central South Carolina. Upon arriving, Randy had the bonfire glowing as the
cars lined up along the airfield. We were treated to delicious taco dips, chili,
hotdogs with all the trimmings and a variety of desserts. After lunch, Ed held the
monthly meeting while folks sat around the firepit making and enjoying s’mores.
Many thanks to Kim & Randy Yaussy for organizing and hosting the wonderful
event.
